Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today (2010)

if you don't already know Ariel Pink this video serves as a pretty fitting intro:
(and he makes out with half the front row @2:30 so thats pretty rock n roll)

the 'time capsule' sound is almost immediately endearing and reminds me of '68 underwater.
never serious and always sexy (or at least faux-sexy) and full of unabashed pop licks that never sound poppy.
definitely not for everyone but most definitely loved by many!

"Before Today" is Ariel Pink's 'indy-major' label debut for 4AD after numerous self releases and a few through Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label.

Just over a year old but feels like a 'classic' album after the first listen.

tl;dr... sexy, dirty, bedroom pop.

Clutchy Hopkins - The Life of Clutchy Hopkins (2006)

Man, oh man. This album is sweet. And Its all live Gs. Made by the mysterious Clutchy Hopkins featuring funky drums, bass, rhodes keys, a couple types of flutes, oh yeah and can't forget the guitar. This album rocks, knocks, and thumps so hard all there is to do is bump it over and over.

The man who is known as Clutchy has a dubious but entertaining back-story floating around the webosphere (just look around this website ) and is now supposedly residing in the Mojave desert in some cave. there also exist a few theories on his true ID that can be found as well. To suit his mysterious and such nature, the track titles are all numbers. somewhat close to the duration of each song. my personal favs right now gotta be:

Track 2:
If you were wondering why I was calling this album funky, well here is a perfect answer for you. Love the live loops. I just got say, listen to that flute.



Track 4:
Smooth and classy is what i would call this song. I can picture ghostface tearin this track a new one. damn. so gangsta, groovin, and then sudenly Hopkins unleashes a radiohead esque guitar riff. complex at first but consistent. sounds like someone knows their hip-hop... oh yeah, how about a nifty bongo groove breakdown to fade out....



Track 5:
If you thought that was good well don't bust one yet, cuz this next one is a heater. Funky bass lines all up in it but then! thats right we gotta chill out again. so much grooves in here.



Track 10:
This one brings a funk that is distinct from the preciously mentioned tracks. This is like some deltron ass beat. funky but twisted. groovin but not with that james brown/parliament funk. these kinda of combos are what keep this album fresh.



Overall i think this is a stellar album. Don't sleep on it. Clutchy also mashed some of his instrumentals over MF DOOM acapellas if you wanna go look for that.

btw i CAN'T STAND the last song. is it just me or does this track blow 37672978379201.23882382999999 more times than anything else on this album? it reminds of some crappy modest mouse song on off sad sappy sucker.

Pelican City - The Chilling Effect (1999)

You all know who Danger Mouse is. Rolling Stone's current "producer of the year." well he is a pretty sick producer and he did produce during this year so.... Anyway, if you are a fan of that whole producing/Danger Mouse thing then you might be interested in peeping his early work as Pelican City. Massively chill beats at that down-tempo pace. You know the type. Very consistent album which is both positive and negative but it definitely adds to the cohesive album feel of all the tracks.


Be sure to check out Danger's take on Neutral Milk Hotel's "Fool" on track 6 for all that are wise to NMH. Now thats how you flip a beat.

French hip-hop. Instrumental album from Paris native Guts. Solid beats and tight album full of good tracks and some decent ones. Pretty standard style nothing revolutionary but the presence of quality hip-hop is undeniably present.

1. Intro: Actually, this intro is a good introduction to this artist. Informs you that you are in for a dosage of nice vocal sample work over beats that are both mellow and groovin.

3. Everybody Know: Chill piano loop makes a jazzy and driving beat. more of that vocal sample trickery.

4. you know dat shit!!!: since this song uses the same sample that J Dilla used in "U-Luv" this song really doesn't do it for me. It's really unfair but "U-Luv" is too damn amazing. If anything this song is a testament to how talented Dilla was and it shows what he can do with a beat and how innovative he was.

8. Take a Look Around You: Probably my favorite track on the album as of now. The vocal sample trickery here is here in full effect displaying Guts style at its finest. A track to get you movie in your upper story.

11. Cry & Smile: Full ensemble of instruments and samples. gotta love that breakdown with the guitar and tremolo picking and how it drops back into the original beat. nicely arranged, slightly banging.

13. Sweet Love: chill is a good word for this. I can't help but be reminded of fellow French hip-hop producer DJ Cam's album "Mad Blunted Jazz" when I hear this beat. Some call it trip-hop but if you like this beat and haven't heard of DJ Cam then you know what to do. I probably like Cam more but I fid]gured that Guts is less known and has more different styles.

14. Endless Night: maybe my new favorite song on this album. Epic intro and kind of asian sounding guitar along with the funky drummer. sounds like my kinda party.

15. Narco Trip: kinda reminds me of some Pelican City style beats (a project of Danger Mouse aka Gnarls Barkley minus Cee Lo Green). Once again if this beat is feelin you or vice versa check out that Pelican City project as I once again think that is an equally or even possibly more solid album.

Jeru the Damaja - Wrath of the Math (1996)

"this album was created to SAVE hip-hop and the minds of the people who listen to it"

so it says in the liner notes and so i introduce the sophomore album of Jeru the Damaja produced entirely by the amazing DJ Premier. Premo laces up some funk nuggets on this album which Jeru thoroughly rips apart, torches and smokes. Like his debut album Jeru brings the conscious lyrics and never settles into any hip-hop stereotypes. Premier brings those characteristic boom bap drums and from listening to the beats on the album it is easy to see why Premo is Premo. Diving in...

First five tracks are all great especially, "The Frustrated Nigga" & "Whatever."

On "The Frustrated Nigga" when that guitar, or whatever that is, kicks a second after Jeru starts flowin theres not much you can do but let that head start noddin. Flowin without fear because yaa know

"nothin can scare a nigga, after 400 years of this shit."

"Bullshit" is one of many tracks on this album throwing some satire at money grubbing, materialism but on this track Jeru does it by rapping as if he has become what he most loathes in some kind of funky nightmare soundtracked by DJ Premier.

"Whatever" has a mellow ass beat with the topic of not getting dragged down by all the wackness. Whatever ya do make it clever. I mostly just like that vocal sample Premo uses "and to all ya'll crews.... whatever" good ass diss stinging like nettle

I got to say that my least favorite track on this album is pretty easy for me to choose. I just can't get into the beat for "Physical Stamina (ft. Afu-Ra)" it's a little robotic and eclectic for me.

"One Day" is about how puff daddy kidnapped "hip-hop"

Pretty much the sole reason I made this post about this album is because I've been diggin "Me or the Papes" so damn much. This beat right here is ridiculous and that piano loop just drives me nuts all day. from just thinking in my head how it sounds, it gets me smiling and thinking about some silly ass chick tryin to use me and me just laughing her away from me. silly imaginary skanks. if you gain anything from this album let it be that if you play this song when I'm around I'll melt.

Ending with "invasion" about racial profiling cops. even though I love cops to death, I somehow still like this track. especially because of that outro beat with that nice orchestral loop or wind section or something.

Slum Village - Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1

This here was a released in 1997 and is the debut album of Slum Village. Jay Dee, T3, and Baatin from Detroit all flow with impressive mic control over some of the smoothest and earliest J Dilla beats released. This album is part demo so it has that vibe but it is filled with awesome tracks. I think that almost anyone can find a favorite track on this album.

Perfect use of James Brown vocal samples throughout the the track intertwined with smooth flows along mellow groovin beats with those Dilla drums.

Short but sweet . Savage song structure and some burnin flows "fuckin up instrumentals." Hard and bangin' over sweet guitar or vibe samples? who can tell me? keyboard!? i think thats what it is.

DJ Shadow

Heard of DJ Shadow? Hip/Hop producer and DJ. Excellent producer and DJ. Always brings some large beats to the table. Sequences them up so funky. Here are 3 EPs of his featuring some material that you might not have heard before and some that you might have. Two of these EPs, High Noon and Stem feature some tracks that appear on Shadow's debut Endtroducing... while the third, Lost & Found (S.F.L.)/Kemuri, is a split EP featuring the Japanese DJ, DJ Krush on the latter track. Definitely some gems in here.

"High Noon" is a sweet track featuring a guitar riff which drops out to a solid break and keys section. A fairly typical DJ Shadow instrumental which in my opinion is most often a good thing cuz at least you'll be able to hear some awesome drums.

The vocal sample in "Devil's Advocate (Heaven v. Hell - Bonus Beat)" says it all. It's all about the beat on this track. Many various other instruments and sounds come into this track but it is the drums that keep it going and when the track strips down to solely drums the track really stands out.

"Stem" features some more electronic sounding beats. The other version of stem, "Long Stem" uses part of the sample from "Organ Donor" and is a good alternate mix to the original. Much more drawn out and without the enormous drums in the original. Upgrade IMO. "Red Bus Needs To Leave" is once again another chance for DJ Shadow to show off his drum sequencing skills. Finally "Why Hip Hop Sucks In '96/Soup" feature the same beat but with different vocal samples. This time I'd have to favor the album cut.

The final EP features the awesome DJ Krush and you can hear his influence in both his cut and Shadow's. I'd have to say that DJ Krush's track gets my head nodding quicker but Shadow's track on this EP is one of my favorites of all 3 EPs.

Overall just a bunch of solid tracks from a couple solid EPs by a couple solid artists.
